New ebook reveals why the majority of mlmers fail in their business... Click Here! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This economy has caught many people by surprise. Many have lost their jobs or their businesses to the unexpected downturn. If you really look at the situation in hindsight it was inevitable. Among other human missteps of late, part of the reason for the downturn, is our dependence on oil. It was bound to come back and bite us in the you know what eventually, just like it did back in the seventies. Our refusal to learn the lesson is bound to repeat itself over and over unless we put an end to the dependence on oil, and move on to other forms of energy. Luckily we have a president that seems to be interested in making this happen. I’m sure that part of this infrastructure plan involves Green infrastructure.
Which bring us to the question, why not look at the bad economy as an opportunity? Maybe it’s time for a turn around, a time for Greenies like us to look into not only helping the planet but making a living at it too. Here is a list of Green Start-ups put out by Entrepreneur Magazine:
- Eco-tourism Travel Guide: Eco-tourism travel has caught fire with people that care about the environment and the impact that they can make on that environment both ecologically and socially. This would include activities such as adventure sports, wilderness adventure trips, nature travel and education. This venture is for someone who loves to travel and is or can become a knowledgeable guide who can organize “Genuine Green Trips”. With a relatively small initial investment and the commitment learn and to teach people about their impact on natural systems and native communities, this can be turned into a viable business.
- Green Advertising Agency: The Green Trend is gaining ground and businesses will need of advertisers specializing in getting the message out about their commitment to sustainability. Anyone with experience in graphic design, media, communications and sustainability can make a go of this.
- Green Start-up Finance Broker:Someone with a financial background and connections could delve into a business that finds investment money for new Green businesses.
- Green Home Remodeling: A person with knowledge of building, redecorating, interior design and sustainable materials could find a place in the home remodeling niche. Green building and remodeling has become smart and chic, helping people realize the energy efficiency and safety of their space would become quite profitable. I’m sure most people have seen those commercials about mesothelioma, which is a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, a commonly used building material of the past. Just like asbestos there are many other toxic materials used in building that can be avoided, and people are becoming more informed and interested in living and working in these toxic-free environments.
- Green Cleaning Services: Green Janitorial Companies are sprouting up everywhere. Cleaning a space without all those nasty chemicals and fumes is a concept that is catching on quickly. There is a growing demand for cleaning services that perform their function without harming the environment or the people that work or live in these spaces. Schools are a niche that could be sought out.
- Eco-Salon:The health and beauty industry and their wide use of chemicals may be a thing of the past. Now come the Eco-Salons or healthy salons that provide healthy alternatives to the chemical laden treatments of the past. Salons and Day Spas Non-toxic substitutes are now widely available and becoming the trend.
- Eco-Friendly Furniture: Whether you are a designer or a retailer of furniture, this niche could be something for you. With all the materials ending up in the landfill, there is a need for artistic and innovative people to come up with furniture options for all these materials. And with a more conscientious society furniture made with eco-friendly and recycled materials is catching on.
- Low- Water Landscaping: For those with a green thumb, this business could be something for you. Developing landscaping that requires low-water use. Landscaping can be beautiful, but it can also be very expensive when it comes to water usage. Water conservation is big, very popular especially in the dryer states of the west. Xeriscaping as it’s called, is not hard to sell, when you can show your customers that by using drought tolerant plants they can save up to 50% in their water consumption, they are beautiful and easy to take care.
- Green B&B: The Green B&B is not your typical hotel, it is a business that incorporates some of the other businesses mentioned earlier. It uses sustainable building materials, green cleaning materials that are non-toxic to it’s guests. Readily offers recycling opportunities, uses the local organic fair, employs water conservation throughout the garden and in the toilets and sinks. Energy efficiency throughout with sensor lights, and also asks the guest to participate in the green experience.

A close look at Poverty in America. This independent film takes a look at the problem of poverty right here at home in the streets of LA. Pras Michel a successful member of The Fuggees hip-hop band, goes undercover to take a closer look at the life of homeless people by living in Skid Row for 9 days. This is haunting film which brings awareness to the problem of poverty that most of us in America would rather not be reminded of, but that is very real and unless we intervene as a society, we cannot ultimately be successful.
Skid Row
2007 | 94 min
“Skid Row” is a 50-square block area in downtown Los Angeles where an average of 90,000 homeless and transient people live on any given night. More than just a place - it’s a way of life, a mind set, the last resort for those who have given up on society and, in many cases, themselves. In the feature documentary SKID ROW, Pras Michel - one third of the successful hip-hop band The Fugees - lives on the streets of Skid Row for nine straight days and nights as a homeless person. The entire time he and his crew are undercover, using surveillance cameras. His journey is a difficult one, riddled with hunger, exposure to the elements, criminals, drugs and danger. It is also life-changing…as Pras learns not only how to fend for himself, but discovers the dark, very human and, at times, humorous underbelly of Los Angeles.
Wondering what you can do? We can all do things to alleviate this problem, it’s a matter of committing to the idea that we all have to do our part.
Go here to find out what you can start doing today…

This independent film narrated by Robert Redford, is about how the coal companies tried to fast track their way into Texas. Watching this movie gives you an idea how when big business has the prey in their eyesight, they will put out all the stops, steal and lie to get what they want. If environmentalists are not watching out for the people and the planet, big business will have their way and they don’t have our interests at heart. This film is an inspiration to all that are fighting against big business greed. The film is about a half hour long and well worth the time.
How far should we be willing to go? As far as it takes! Become involved, we do have a say.
“From the outset FIGHTING GOLIATH: TEXAS COAL WARS was intended to serve as a tool for raising awareness, inspiring action, and creating a meaningful dialogue about how to overcome one of the greatest threats to public health contributors to global warming faced by the U.S.—conventional coal-fired power plants. FIGHTING GOLIATH follows the story of farmers, ranchers and Mayors fighting against the construction of 18 new coal-burning power plants in Texas. TXU Corp. withdrew eight of the 11 permit applications shortly before the case went to court, when it was announced that shareholders would sell the utility to private equity firms. The film was produced by the Redford Center at the Sundance Preserve and Alpheus Media, and directed by Mat Hames and George Sledge.”

Teaching our children to be good stewards of their planet should start at home, but since our children spend a good portion of their day inside a school building it is smart to continue the lesson there.
The move towards greening our schools is gaining ground despite budget cuts and other priorities. Starting with the foundation that the buildings that are occupied by the nations children and their educators “should protect occupant health, provide a productive learning environment, connect students to the natural world, increase average daily attendance, reduce operating costs, improve teacher satisfaction and retention, and reduce overall impact to the environment.” (Green Global USA)
An example of how some school districts are taking this to heart comes from an article I read in the Natural Awakenings magazine that talked about Green Schools in Flagger Co. Florida. Flagger Co. charter schools are doing a good job of implementing these principles. They started a three year project to “Go Green” by sticking to five basic principles.
- A Toxic free setting: by providing an environment for students and teachers that uses no toxic pesticides, no lead-based products, uses building materials that maintain healthy indoor air quality and no building characteristics that would produce mold.
- Using resources sustainably: Energy efficiency, water conservation, and green building design for new construction or remodeling. Green School supplies made of recycled materials.
- Create Green Healthy Outdoor Spaces: Such as non-toxic materials used to build or remodel school yards and gardens.
- Farm to school Organic produce: An initiative to help local farmers and provide students with a mineral rich whole foods menu, void of junk-food, fast food and sodas.
- Engaging the students in the whole “Go Green” process: Uses the project as a learning model for teaching students the dynamics of social and economic change.
Wouldn’t it be great if all schools would take this approach.

September 21st, 2008 at 12:21 pm by bibi in Alternative Energy, Conservation, Environment, Go Green, Green Business, Green Cleaning, Living Green, Solar, Sustainable------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The deterrent for going solar is often times the up front costs of installing solar panels on a house or a commercial building where it can take years to repay itself in energy savings. At the commercial level it is even more difficult to make solar a viable consideration because the costs of energy are typically passed on to the tenants.
A start up from Silicon Valley has come up with a technology that would bring the cost of solar power down to be in competition with fossil fuels like coal fired electricity. Their innovation: SUNRGI’s “concentrated photovoltaic” system, uses lenses to magnify the power of the sun 2000 times, letting it produce as much electricity as standard panels but with a far smaller system. They plan to start producing panels in 2009 that would put out electricity at a cost of 7c per kwh compared to the 20c-30c per kwh which is the standard for solar systems that are on the market today and is the reason why solar systems are not as popular as they could be. Everyone likes the idea of solar, no one likes the costs. More info.
Another way of getting solar energy into the mix. In order to help commercial building owners take a serious look at going green, there are companies that have come up with a way to finance these energy-saving improvements. What they do is contract with building owners to provide energy at a fixed cost for 10 years. Once they have a contract they invest the capital in the building for the energy-saving improvements. Of course these companies are in it to make a profit and make their money by creating a space between what the owner pays for the energy and what they pay the utility companies. But most importantly they provide a way for commercial building owners to go green, which is something that was not attainable for them otherwise. I read about this in Entrepreneur Mag and they mentioned Transcend Equity Develepement Corp as providing this service.
Another innovation I came across is Solar Panel Paint, yep you heard right. Researchers at Swansea University in the UK and at the University of Toronto are developing a new, eco-friendly technology that could foreseeable make every rooftop an electricity generating machine, for that matter any surface the sun shines on. They have come up with a way to use materials other than conventional solar cells that are more efficient at collecting low light radiation. They are developing an efficient solar cell system that can be applied to steel building products through the use of paint. Imagine being able to paint on your electricity… More info… Even More Info…

Part of the Pickens Energy plan is to use wind to power 20% of the electricity for the country. See what happens to a town that is already on that track: Sweetwater, Texas was becoming a sleepy town starting to lose it’s residents do to a shortage of jobs, but it received a shot in the arm when a large wind power facility was built just outside of town. This has brought in new construction jobs, maintenance and manufacturing jobs and more spending power into the local economy. It’s not only good for the environment but also for the economy. In the midst of high oil prices and global warming scares, a 100 mpg car sounds like a dream, but it may not be for long. The X-Foundation has put together a contest with 10 million dollars in prizes, for the group that comes out with the first 100 mile per gallon vehicle. The contest mission is to inspire and promote innovation to come up with cars that are super-energy efficient, affordable, safe for people and the environment, “not just science projects.”
The winning vehicle will have to have gas mileage that exceeds 100 mpg or the equivalent of any other fuel source. Each team will have to go through a rigorous qualification process that will take a look at not only gas mileage but also costs, features, production capabilities, consumer friendliness, safety and meet strict emissions standards. After being chosen each team will race their cars at 2 cross-country stage races that will take place in 2009 and 2010. The winner will be chosen by the overall time, while still meeting the mpg and emission standards.
So far 93 contenders have signed up for the challenge but only one major manufacturer has taken up the challenge, and that is Tata Motors, India’s largest automobile company.
More detailed information on this contest can be found in this interview with the Auto X-Prize senior director, John Shore.

To continue the family business, is his duty, to help save the oceans and the rivers of the world is his passion. Philippe Cousteau Jr., the grandson of the infamous Jacques and son of the equally famous father Philippe, side by side with sister Alexandra, continue the work of the family by filming nature documentaries and educating people on becoming better stewards of this earth.
Wearing many hats at once it seems, the array of his work spans from filming documentaries on the beauty of the underworld, to the fierceness of it’s inhabitant. Ironically while filming a documentary called “Ocean’s Deadliest” for the Animal Planet, where he is Chief Ocean Correspondent, Cousteau witnessed the death of the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin. He also films public announcements about environmental issues, but no matter what he is doing his core mission never wanes, to save the earth’s waters from humanity’s impact. Along with his family he has formed a non-profit organization called EarthEcho International, an environmental action group whose motto is “Everything you do makes a difference”.
Here’s a video about the EarthEcho International teaming up with Vans Warped Tour that travels around the country raising awareness about environmental issues.

With the price of gas not going down as fast as any of us would like, it might be time to tune out gas and plug in.
Electric plug-in vehicles are looking real good. Manufacturers are busy developing not just passenger vehicles but also commercial, recreational, conversion and charging applications that will become part of our future faster than we think. Here are some choices to look at.

- A fun way to spend an afternoon with kids or friends is to put together a mosaic. Never throw away chipped plates or glasses, save them up and when you have enough make a mosaic out of them, make it a party.
- Need a use for old cinder blocks? Make a garden bench out of them, stack them up 2 high and wide enough for 2 people to sit in, line them up against a wall and top with a foam cushion and pillows lined with scrap pieces of fabric.
- Take an old door that is not being used, spiff it up with some sanding and fresh paint and hang it horizontally behind a bed as a headboard.
- Have some old PVC pipe hanging around, get some elbows and T’s (they’re cheap at the hardware store), play with the design and come up with some functional items for the garden. Make a coffee table, a gardening stool, if you have a lot and are adventurous maybe a chair.
- Take old cast iron garden furniture that you don’t like out there anymore, and bring it in the house. Cut it into pieces that can lay flat and hang it as wall art, or hang it from the ceiling.
- Old book cases or any scrap wood can always be turned into something else. One idea is to cut the wood into strips and turn it into frames, place some inexpensive molding on it and save yourself a whole lot of money.
- Old switch plates can be painted and reused as frames also. Cut a piece of sturdy cardboard with the same dimensions as the switch plate. Attach your picture centered on the piece of cardboard and then hot glue the cardboard to the switch plate.
- Empty wine or beer or any kind of bottle can be used as a flower vase. Just gather some favorite magazine pictures or you favorite wall paper and decoupage it onto the bottle making it now a decorative piece that can be enjoyed.
You get the message, use your imagination before throwing anything out. See what other uses you can find for those objects. Keep looking back for more ideas and please add you ideas in the comments.

Save Energy On the Road
Current high gas prices are giving people even more incentive to increase fuel efficiency. Plus, using less gas by following these tips will also help reduce smog and emissions that contribute to global warming:
Change your air filter. Cleaning your air filter regularly can improve your gas mileage significantly. Don’t speed. Being a good driver can save you some dollars at the pump. Speeding uses extra gas. Rapid acceleration and hard braking are also inefficient and lower your gas mileage.
Cruise control. Using your cruise control will keep you driving at a more consistent speed and can generally improve fuel efficiency.
Turn your car off. Idling can use a lot of gas. Generally, it’s more efficient to turn the car off and restart when you are ready to go. If you are thinking of hitting the drive-through, consider parking and picking up food inside. For short waits, put your car in neutral to avoid burning gas.
Inflate tires properly. Car tires that are under-inflated will lead to poor gas mileage. You can often find the correct pressure for your car printed on the edge of the driver’s side door.
Mileage still too low? Consider getting a tune up. A tune up will generally make a modest, but sometimes significant, improvement in your miles per gallon.
You can find these tips and more in Diane MacEachern’s new book, Beat High Gas Prices Now!

An important part of keeping your house Green, is making sure that your appliances are working as they should. All appliances must be in top working order or they are not working efficiently. That means more money going out the door but it can also mean that there are pollutants escaping into your home environment and the outside environment.
Especially when you have your refrigerator maintained it is important to make sure that they are properly checked for leaks and efficiency. If you are hiring someone to do this, just make sure that the company you are using is a reputable one, and make sure to ask what they will checking for and what the results are when they are finished.
If you are a “do-it yourself” person or you are in the business of appliance maintenance, a great tool for performing the job of checking for leaks are Refrigerant Leak Detectors .
Some of the features that you are looking for in a tool like this would be:
1.Built in battery
2.Detects all CFC, HFC and HCFC refrigerants
3.Unique sensor calibration system
4.Pinpoints large and small leaks
5.Manual and automatic sensitivity adjustment
6.Heated diode technology
