When I was walking in the forest I came across a Norwegian Spruce (Picea abies) tree that was broken and I liked the view with the trunk looking at the fallen tree. It seems like a strong wind had passed through the forest and snapped the tree in two. There was several trees in that area that had been toppled over some years ago (the vegetation had started to grow back) so it was a cool area to explore.
I had to climb up some trees to get this picture and I almost fell down several times ;). I think the broken tree picture got somewhat of a dark, eerie feeling to it. What do you think?

I was out walking in the forest early today and I came across this field that was frozen. I really enjoyed all the grass that had frozen in the water and the trees standing around the field covered with rime.
We are having a cold period with -12C so everything outside is covered with frozen water and gives me a lot of photo opportunities.
Happy new year everyone! My resolution for 2009 is to take way more pictures and post them on this blog as I have lately been a bit lazy when it comes to photography. Don’t miss the Photos from Northern Norway 2009 calendar and my other photos with ice.

Here I have photographed the landscape outside my house in Nesodden (Akershus county in southeastern Norway) after a fresh snowfall. The snow covered everything with a thick layer of white crystals making the landscape calm and quiet.
Fresh snow can look very good and makes many photo opportunities. I turned this picture into black and white since the scenery didn’t contain many colors and BW often fits snow sceneries very well.
I’m a bit surprised with the winter here in southeastern part of Norway as I thought it would be much warmer than I’m used to from the north. It has actually snowed more here than the average Northern Norway-winter, but you don’t get the cold winds from the arctic sea here in the south.

My 2008 Photos from Northern Norway calendar was a pretty big success with many people thanking me for making such a nice calender so I decided to make a 2009 version of the calendar. The calendar is made up from the same pictures as last year, but new and old readers might interested in a calendar consisting of Norwegian scenery for the next year.
The Photos from Northern Norway calendar consists of 12 pictures that I have hand picked to represent each month of the year.
You can check out the individual pictures here:
January - Winter landscape, young seagull and fata morgana
February - Photo of pebble beach and a mountain covered in snow
March - Windy weather beyond the polar circle
April - A closer view of a snail
May - Photo of sunset at 01:30 AM - Midnight sun is here
June - Photo of old fence keeping out hordes of yellow flowers
July - Amazing red sunset at midnight in Northern Norway
August - Wide angle picture of sunset on a beach
September - First snow in the mountains - autumn soon to come
October - Winter has come to Northern Norway - Photo of waves on the coast

In this picture you can see some Norway maple (Acer platanoides) leaves that I photographed this autumn. I really like the shape of maple leaves and with autumn colors they can be a stunning sight. The sun were shining through the tree tops unto the leaves so I just had to take a picture of them.
The autumn colors are almost gone now so it is nice to able to look some pictures and remember how nice it was.
The Norway maple is the only type of maple tree that is native to Norway. The maple trees grow in the southern part of Norway where the climate is a bit warmer.
Check out my other photo from the same trip of the forest floor covered with leaves and my other autumn pictures here. Note: This photo was taken in the southeastern part of Norway.

Here I have photographed a beautiful Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) bird. This is the first time I have ever photographed a woodpecker as they are pretty rare and often fly off before you are able to take a good photo. The Great Spotted Woodpecker is one of our biggest woodpeckers and it is the most common woodpecker bird in Europe. The Great Spotted Woodpecker is about 25 cm long and weighs 70–90 g.
In the winter the bird eats seeds from spruce and pine trees, and some bark beetles. During the summer it mainly eats insects, but the Great Spotted Woodpecker is also known for breaking into nests and eating the young birds.
Check out my other photos of Norwegian birds here.
